Extreme Places on the Earth

Be it the highest, deepest, longest, hottest, weirdest, scariest or quietest, our world is full of interesting places and features that leave us spellbound. These may be natural or man-made and some are debatable but their appeal and effect on us are definitely staggering.
So here is a random list of the World’s …-est places you may really want to experience yourself!

  • Hottest Place on Earth – Death Valley, California, USA

The hottest temperature ever recorded here was 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celcius) on July 10, 1913.

  • Coldest Place on Earth – Oymyakon, Russia

Considered as the coldest inhabited region on the Earth, lowest temperatures here have gone down to -68 degrees Celcius in 1933. This year, the village also witnessed a thermometer break down as temperatures went plunging to -62 degrees Celcius, and you surely saw Instagram flooded with pictures of citizens with frozen eyelashes!

  • Wettest Place on Earth – Mawsynram, Meghalaya, India

Although we have heard of Cherapunjee holding this title, the villae of Mawsynram (not very far from Shillong), receives an annual average rainfall of about 11,872 millimetres making it the wettest place on earth.

  • Driest Place on Earth – Atacama desert, Chile

Weather stations here have never recorded any rainfall and the town of Calama has not seen a single drop of rain for nearly 400 years (1570-1971). The Atacama Desert is probably the oldest dry spot on the earth.
Fun fact: The terrain here is so unusual that Hollywood, as well as NASA, use it to depict Mars surface or to test instruments meant for space.

  • Brightest Place on Earth – Las Vegas strip

This man-made region is considered to be the brightest spot on Earth, especially when viewed from above owing to the bright conglomeration of hotels and casinos on this strip.

  • Quietest Place on Earth – Orfield Laboratories, Minnesota

An ‘anechoic chamber’ created for training astronauts and for testing mechanical instruments holds the record for being the quietest place on earth with noise levels in negative decibels. This place is so quiet that humans inside can hear their own pulse. 45minutes is the longest duration that anybody has been able to stay inside the chamber.

This is definitely not a comprehensive list and if you are adventurous enough, you can check out the scariest, darkest, and other places on Earth and probably even pay them a visit!
