When Will Maryland Sports Fans Be Able To Bet Online

Back in May of 2021, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed off on HB 940, which legalized online sports betting in the state. Maryland is expected to be home to nearly 50 retail sportsbooks and up to 60 mobile betting apps. However, residents of the state will need to wait a bit longer to access the sports betting apps.

When Will Maryland Sports Fans Be Able To Bet Online?

Currently, residents of Maryland are limited to about a half dozen retail sportsbooks. They include: MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, and Horseshoe Casino Baltimore. Again as mentioned before, the state did approve mobile sportsbook licenses (up to 60 max), however, no sports betting apps are live and operational in Maryland quite yet.

It’s likely that mobile sportsbook apps will not be ready for launch until the middle of 2022, well after the Super Bowl and likely after the March Madness tournament

According to John Martin, the director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA), there is still uncertainty in terms of when Maryland sports betting apps will launch but everyone is hopeful sports fans will be able to access online sportsbooks before the start of the 2022 NFL season.

It is worth noting that Maryland sportsbooks will need different classes of licenses if they wish to operate a retail sportsbook or an online sportsbook. That is one reason why retail sportsbooks are live and mobile sportsbooks are not — some retail locations have been licensed and approved to launch under the retail sportsbook license parameters.

What Mobile Sportsbooks Will Be Available in Maryland?

While it’s not official, we can say with extreme confidence that BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and FanDuel will be among the first mobile sportsbooks to launch in Maryland. That’s because they already have retail sportsbooks up-and-running in the state.

Additionally, three other sportsbook operators have secured local partnerships, which will undoubtedly help with their launch plans. They include: PointsBet who has partnered with the Riverboat on the Potomac, Barstool Sportsbook who has partnered with Hollywood Casino Perryville, and TwinSpires who has partnered with Ocean Downs.

Other top candidates to launch in Maryland come 2022 include FoxBet, BetRivers, and DraftKings.

How Can I Sports Bet Online in Maryland?

Once online sportsbooks launch in 2022, betting online will be very simple and straight-forward. First and foremost, you will be able to choose between logging onto a sportsbook via a web browser or via their mobile app from your smart device’s app store.

Once you’ve downloaded the app or logged on, you will be prompted to register with the sportsbook and provide basic information such as your age, name, address, etc. The process takes a few short minutes and is relatively painless.

During the registration process you will be prompted to enter a promotional code. Across the country sportsbooks offer new players promotions to create an account with their app. Maryland sports fans will be pleased to know that they can fully expect a new sign-up bonus from each sportsbook — one of the most common sign-up bonuses offered is a free bet of up to $1,000.

After you complete the registration process you’ll just need to fund your account and you’ll be ready to bet online. Note, you can only place wagers while inside state lines. Mobile sportsbooks use geofencing technology to confirm if you are located within state lines and eligible to bet.
