The young Utah Jazz have been surprising everyone throughout the playoff series after taking a 3-1 lead against the star studded Oklahoma City Thunder but on Wednesday night the last year NBA MVP Russell Westbrook was on a mission and Paul George channeled his inner ‘Playoff P’ to secure a 107-99 victory against the Utah Jazz in the first round of the NBA 2017-18 Playoffs.
Russell Westbrook who has now averaged a triple double for two consecutive NBA seasons scored 45 points along with 15 rebounds and 7 assists while Paul George dropped 34 points to go along with 8 rebounds.
Russell Westbrook led an incredible comeback for the Oklahoma City Thunder, setting up an unlikely Game 6.
The Utah Jazz had as much as a 25-point lead in the third quarter, but the reigning NBA MVP, as well as his fellow star Paul George, led the Thunder on an unexpected run to retake the lead, and ultimately win the game.
The Jazz were led by Jae Crowder’s 27 points, while Ricky Rubio had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. Australian wing, Joe Ingles, finished with 16 points for the Jazz, shooting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. He also had four rebounds and three assists, playing 42 minutes. Danté Exum played just two minutes off the bench. Utah opened the second half on an 8-1 run to go up 64-42, and Crowder’s 3-pointer made it 71-46 with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Westbrook hit back-to-back 3-pointers, then made a layup with 5:07 left in the third quarter to cut Utah’s lead to 73-60.
Now that OKC has forced a game 6, it will be interesting to see how the rookie star Donovan Mitchell responds and will he be able to rise up to the occasion or the trio of Westbrook, George and Anthony take it to Game 7 and do what was most expected of them i.e. WIN.
