Lymphatic Massage Drainage: A Quick Self Massage Tutorial

Why Do You Need A Lymphatic Massage Drainage?

Some people wake up with really puffy eyes due to their sleeping habits, work habits or sometimes it’s just hereditary. Others experience pain and discomfort around their eyes due to compromised skin conditions (rosacea and acne), sinus issues, or recent eye, mouth, or plastic surgery. Whenever there is puffiness, swelling, or any form of inflammation it can cause sensitivity (like a pulling or tingling) or sadly pain.

What most of us don’t know is that these issues point in the direction of a sluggish and stagnated lymphatic system. Your body is full of lymph nodes that contain fluid from the face down. When fluid buildup occurs, it causes swelling in all kinds of places you don’t want it—particularly the face. When lymph circulation is impaired, cellular waste builds up in and around the cells, which can cause swelling, puffiness, and even bags under the eyes. A manual lymphatic massage focuses on those important areas by stretching the skin and applying pressure around the lymph nodes to release fluid. This method of moving the waste out is called Lymphatic Drainage.

How Does Lymphatic Massage Work?

Facial skin issues tend to have underlying conditions affecting your skin. But if you’ve ever done a Lymphatic Massage then you know that it can become a brilliant solution for overall health and wellness of the skin and the whole body.

Stimulating the lymph contributes to a quicker healing response and reduces the swelling and inflammation that can ultimately help to diminish facial pain and puffiness. In addition, for those who may not have pain, but have bags under the eyes or facial puffiness, this can help dramatically.

Lymphatic Massage for drainage is best performed by a skilled and trained professional for maximum results. While ideally it is best be overseen by a professional, you can perform a simple self guided daily facial sequence that can give you some pain relief and stimulate the lymphatic system.

How To Reduce Facial Puffiness with Lymphatic Drainage: Video

  • Lymphatic massage for drainage of the puffy face begins on the neck just above the collar bone. Why this area? Well, this is where the terminus is where all lymph from the head and face will drain to.
  • For this type of massage, it is very important to realize that it’s not like other massages. It’s very very soft and light as the lymphatic system sits just under the skin and requires just a feather-light touch to stimulate it.
  • Each step given below will be repeated 3x. On the 3rd repetition, allow your fingers to slide from the sides of the face downward toward the terminus (collar bone) and pump a couple of times.

Here is a photo that will help with this tutorial:

1) Begin with clean hands and a clean face. Then place some fingers lightly just above the collar bone. Lightly let your fingers do a pumping action (almost softly pressing like acupuncture) all along the space just above the collar bone. This will clear the blockage. Go lightly.

2) Now, set your two middle fingers just below the ears and lightly drag them downward on the neck toward the terminus. Repeat 3 times and remain soft.

3) Place the same fingers in the middle of the chin and drag in outward motion to the sides of the face. Repeat 3 times and remain soft.

4) Set the same fingers at corners of the mouth and drag in an outward motion to sides of the face. Repeat 3 times and go lightly.

5) Set the same fingers at the outer corners of the nostrils and drag lightly in an outward motion to the sides of the face. Repeat 3 times and go lightly.

6) Set fingers at the inner corners of the eye and lightly drag in outward motion under the eye area out to the side of the face. Repeat 3 times.

7) Set fingers at the inner corners of the eye and lightly drag in outward motion over the eye area out to the side of the face. Repeat 3 times.

8) Keep the same fingers at the center of the face between your eyebrows and lightly drag in an outward motion over brow bone and out to the side of the face. Repeat thrice.

9) Set your fingers at the center of the forehead and lightly drag in an outward motion to the side of the face. Repeat thrice.

10) Keep the same fingers at the top center of the forehead in the hairline and lightly drag in an outward motion to the side of the face. Repeat thrice.

If you have more time, repeat each step in reverse starting at the top center of the forehead at the hairline. Upon completion of the sequence, keep your hands on the chest and lightly brush your hands outwardly toward the armpits three times. This is important to aid complete drainage.
