Dos And Don’ts During The Rainy Season To Stay Healthy

Monsoon is looked forward to as it provides relax of the severe summer heat. In rainy season people are lured to bingeing on piping pakodas and bhajjiyas from the local chaat-wallahs. This food may taste delicious, but the chances of it being infected are way more. The humidity in an environment is high in monsoon, as a result of which body’s digestive capability tends to bog down. The humidity environment can host several diseases-germs, bacteria, which further result in diseases like viral fever, flu (cold and cough), typhoid, dengue, malaria, intestinal disturbances,  conjunctivitis, and dysentery or diarrhoea and pneumonia
 Here are some dos and don’ts for looking after yourself during the rainy season.
Some Don’ts
Don’t Eat Fry Food Or Street Vendor

  • Avoid fish and prawn as much as possible. As monsoon is considered the breeding season for fishes so they should be best avoided at this time of the year.
  • Due to highly humid weather causes the digestion process to slow down and fried snacks, this can cause bloating, gas or acidity, there is a reason we must stop crave for fried foods during the rainy season.
  • Avoid as much as possible street food, roadside stalls as these are the major cause of gastrointestinal problems.
  • Do not make up your liquid consumption with fizzy, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages and drinks as the preservatives and sugars in them act as diuretics.
  • Try avoiding watermelons and muskmelons as they increase the water retention in the body which can give rise to swelling in your body

Avoid Dairy Products Outside Of Home

  • Do not eat dairy products such as lassi, raita, cheese (paneer) when eating outside of the home.

 Don’t Wear Dirty Or Wet Clothes And Don’t Keep Damp Indoors

  • Damp walls are caused to fungus increase and if you have breathing problems or suffer from asthma or any other, an absolute no-no.

Don’t  Rub Or Touch Your Face And Eyes  With Dirty Hands
Do not touch your face with unclean hands because there are possibilities for, virus, flu and germs to enter your body through the nose, eyes, and mouth.
Don’t Leave Home Without A Mosquito Repellent

  • Mosquitoes and insect-like flies are also developed with the monsoon that can badly impact your body. Staying away from mosquitoes can protect you from malaria. Stay away from flat water where mosquitoes breed.

Do n’t walk in the rain.

  • As rainwater contains acid which can cause infections. Taking shower immediately after getting in the rain will protect your body from the harmful infections.
  • Keep children away from playing in the rain and rainwater.
  • Your hands are the biggest infection carriers so make sure you clean your hands frequently and keep a sanitiser handy.

Some Dos
Follow Healthy Diet

  • Consume more fruits in the rainy season as fruits help increase immunity and restore energy. Apple, mangoes, pomegranates, and pears are some of the best fruits you could eat.
  • Eat moderate quantities of light and boiled like brown rice and oats; they are easily digestible.
  • By having healthy food your body will be nourished with vitamins, proteins that make the body strong to fight against infections.
  • Consuming bitter vegetables like bitter gourd and herbs like neem help to protect infections.
  • During rainy season you should eat green vegetables, fruits, and cereals but vegetables should be boiled properly and food should be cooked well.
  • Eat honey in the season as it’s a good mechanism for digestion and it works as a tonic to keep the intestines hygienic.

Enjoy Warm Beverages

  • You must have warm drinks in monsoon. You can add ingredients like mint powder or ginger in tea or coffee- it will help you fight germs.
  • Boil water with, ginger, tulsi and honey and drink the juice to protect against viral infection.

Always wear Dry clothes and footwear

  • Wear waterproof shoes or open footwear. Keeping an extra pair of clothes and footwear in the office is a good idea.
  • Your laundry must be kept neat and clean.
  • Always carry an Umbrella or raincoat so that you don’t get wet by rain during the monsoon

Keep Your Home Clean And Pest Free

  • It is very important to keep your house clean during rainy days. Make sure that there is no rain waterlogging surrounded your home because it leads to the growth of mosquitoes and other harmful microbial infections.
  • Use a powerful insect repellent to keep mosquitoes away.

Take Vitamin C To Boost Your Immunity

  • Boost your Vitamin C intake, either as a supplement or in a natural state. Doing so will significantly help improve your immunity against cold and flu.
  • Many harmful bacteria can enter your drinking water easily. Therefore you must have a water purifier in your home or drink boiled water.
  • Take herbal tea in rainy season as herbal teas with antibacterial properties are a good idea.
  • Do Exercise Regularly. Engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise and sweat out the extra moisture and potentially harmful bacteria and drink enough water, regardless of your activity levels.

 Bathe Twice A Day, Wash Your Hands Regularly

  • Always make a habit of washing your hands frequently before and after eating food. During the rainy season, it is just to wash your hand whenever you come from outside.
  • Keep yourself properly hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration shockingly happens during monsoon and your body could lead to a drop in the immunity, further making you less energetic.
  • Contaminated water during the rainy season is very high so take shower soon as you reach home in the evening will protect you against infections caused by the increase of sweat and dirt due to humidity.

Don’t let these monsoon diseases reduce your spirit to enjoy the rains. Following simple monsoon protection guidelines and making little changes in your lifestyle will keep you healthy and help you enjoy the joy of this season.
