Clitoral Hood Piercing: Sex and Risks

Getting a clitoral hood piercing takes a lot of courage but did you know that your piercer has to check if you can actually get it done? A vaginal piercing means having the right anatomy to do so. That’s because a lot of women don’t have a clitoris large enough to accommodate a piercing.

Not only that, you need to take into consideration your labia skin (to get pierced) and the risks too.

What is a clitoral hood piercing?

Clitoral hood piercings are Vertical clitoral hood piercings or Horizontal clitoral hood piercings. A clitoral hood piercing is the most common type of vaginal piercing. Most people get it to stimulate their vagina during sex. Don’t confuse a clitoral hood piercing with a clitoris piercing because with a hood piercing, the hood is pierced as the clitoris is very sensitive and piercing it can cause pain and nerve damage.

Vertical clitoral hood piercing: The jewelry penetrates the hood’s top and comes out the bottom; this results in the piercing jewelry being in constant contact with the clitoris.

Horizontal clitoral hood piercings: As the name implies, an HCH piercing is placed through the clitoral hood horizontally, so that the jewelry rests over the top of the clitoris.

Can anyone get a clitoral hood piercing?

If you’re thinking about a clitoral hood piercing, bear in mind that which type to get probably won’t be up to you; it’s dictated by your physiology and how your piercer evaluates the site. A skilled piercer, upon examining your genital area, will recommend one piercing over the other for safety, proper placement, comfort, and best fit. Some women are anatomically suited for either piercing and can make that choice at their own discretion, but this is unusual.

Most women choose the far popular VCH piercing for obvious reasons. It’s way more sexually beneficial than HCH piercings. If you want a VCH piercing, however, a professional piercer must test to see if your clitoral hood is deep enough to support it without damaging your clitoris. If it’s not, she’ll likely recommend an HCH piercing instead.

Does the clitoral hood piercing stimulate the clitoris during sex?

Maybe. That depends on the skill of the piercer and your anatomy. If you receive the best piercing (vertical or horizontal) for your particular anatomy and the piercing was done properly to encourage clitoral climax, then it should enhance pleasure during sex.

Here are some testimonials:

“I got both a vertical hood piercing AND a horizontal hood piercing. The horizontal one is decoration, but the vertical one makes any kind of clitoral stimulation so. much. better. The bar sits  on top of my clit, so oral sex and dry humping or heavy petting are just infinitely better with it.”

“I got this piercing during a bad breakup. When I finally had sex with a new partner, I found that positions that I used to hate felt much better with my clitoral hood piercing. Specifically, my ex always wanted me to do reverse cowgirl, and it just didn’t do anything for me then. But now every time I do this position it causes fireworks.”

“Scissoring with my girlfriend (with the hood piercing) gets me off so much faster now. We actually got our clitoral hoods pierced together, and when they make contact with each other it’s an explosion of sensation for both of us.”

Risks

A clitoral hood piercing (vertical or horizontal) won’t reduce your ability to have an orgasm. Many people still have to worry about this piercing causing impairments though.

When it comes to orgasmic encouragement, the clioral hood has less to offer. In essence, it’s just a protective fold of skin that goes over the clitoris. Most often, a clitoral hood piercing will magnify the effects of stimulation in the area. That is unless the piercer places the piercing in the wrong placement.

For example, a clitoral piercing which goes through the actual clitoris can have untoward effects. The nerve damage could cause you to lose all feeling in the area and even diminish or destroy your ability to achieve orgasm. However, this is a worst-case scenario. So we emphasise on getting only a highly skilled professional piercer to perform a clitoral piercing.

Here are a few precautions to reduce risks:

  • Not all states have laws regulating piercings. It’s important to make sure you choose a reputable shop. Look for someone who is a member of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP), which means that the person has at least one year of piercing experience, as well as training in anti-infection and first-aid techniques.
  • He or she should ask for your ID, clean the genital area thoroughly with antiseptic, wear gloves, and use a new sterilized needle.
  • Choose stainless steel, niobium, or titanium jewelry to prevent an infection or allergic reaction.
  • After you get pierced, follow all instructions for keeping the area clean. Wash the area regularly with a diluted saline solution and an antibacterial soap and water. Don’t use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Betadine, or ointment.
  • Loose-fitting clothing are best in order to avoid too much friction in the pierced area.
  • Don’t have sex for at least two weeks after getting pierced. After sex, clean the pierced area with saline solution or clean water afterward.
  • Avoid pools and hot tubs until the area has healed.
  • Jewelry from a piercing may poke a hole in a condom or dislodge a diaphragm. Always use a second form of birth control in addition to using a condom if you have a piercing. Remember that condoms are the only method of birth control that protects against STDs.
  • It’s normal to have some discharge after you get a piercing. But if that discharge is unusually colored (green) or foul smelling, you may have an infection. Leave jewelry in place, but clean the area with antibacterial soap and warm compresses. Ask your doctor if you need an antibiotic to help the infection clear up more quickly.

How you take your clitoral hood piercing for a ride is upto you, but make sure to look after it, and look after yourself.
