18 Indian Clothing Brands That You Thought Were Foreign

Indian Clothing Brands

If you’re like me and shifted to India like a decade ago, you would have initially noticed some brands that stood out in malls for looking uber modern or what the locals like to call: “western”. Now, of course, this is before Forever 21, H & M, Marks and Spencer or even Max (one of the most popular brands for Indians to shop at in Dubai/Sharjah or other GCCs) established themselves on Indian soil as an option. Even Sephora launched their brand just 3 or 4 years ago in most metros.  And this goes to show that while the big fashion moguls are taking over the Indian market slowly, Indian’s who have lived here can point out that one modern shop in the middle of the “bazaar” that they came across fastidiously albeit totally unaware that it wasn’t manufactured, assembled or priced too far away from their homes. This is our list of Indian clothing brands that you mistook for being foreign.

Fun Fact: If you’re anything like me, you also might spot many of these brands in Indian airports as you stroll down to your Boarding Gate.

They have built loyal consumers as these brands have given more choice to the brand conscious Indian consumer looking for that modern edge, for a long time. Thus, they are able to give stiff competition to the foreign brands that entered the Indian market post-liberalisation. Nevertheless, foreign brands are still preferred in India as the consumer will always be more attracted towards a global appeal. Thus, to attract more consumers, especially the ones more favourable to foreign brands, many companies have chosen foreign names for their clothes and accessories.
