Tom Ellis continues to steal hearts in Netflix’s Lucifer, in which the dark haired, tempestuously tall heartthrob plays the devil himself. The television show is based on the hit comic book character of Lucifer that first appeared in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series and then went on to get its own spin-off series that was written by Mike Carey. 1. Tom Ellis is Welsh:

Ellis was born and raised in Cardiff, Wales. He attended high school in High Storrs School in Sheffield, and later attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.

2. He’s 42:

Despite his youthful appearance, Tom Ellis is 42. The actor was born November 17, 1978, making him a Scorpio.

3. He was in EastEnders:

Tom looks a lot different now, but one of Ellis’s earliest roles was in the BBC soap EastEnders. Before Lucifer, he was making money and a name for himself playing Dr. Oliver Cousins in the BBC One soap opera from January-May 2006

4. He was also on Miranda:

Ellis had a recurring role in Miranda Hart’s sitcom Miranda, playing Gary Preston on BBC. 

The character Gary Preston was Miranda’s primary love interest in the series – a tall drink for a tall woman! 

5. Ellis was married to Tamzin Outhwaite:

When Tom Ellis and Tamzin Outhwaite tied the knot, celebrities like James McAvoy and Liam Gallagher were in attendance. Actress Tamzin known for acting in EastEnders divorced Ellis in 2013, citing his adultery. The acting duo was married for seven years and have two daughters.

6. Tom Ellis is now married to Meghan Oppenheimer:

In 2019, Ellis said his “I do” to American screenwriter Meaghan Oppenheimer. 

Meghan’s screenwriting credits include the Zac Efron film We Are Your Friends, Fear the Walking Dead and the Facebook Watch series Queen America.

7. Ellis hasn’t seen his daughters for seven months due to the pandemic:

According to an interview with The Guardian, Ellis revealed that lockdown left him stuck in America, separated from his children.

“It’s been excruciating,” he said.

“There is a part of you that isn’t there when they’re not around.”

8. He misses acting in theatre:

Ellis told The Guardian that while Lucifer has made him globally famous, he misses performing on stage.

“It’s like rehab for acting,” he said.

“Obviously, (coronavirus) is just a tricky thing to talk about with anyone that works in the theatre at the moment.

“But, obviously, I believe the theatre is not going to die. It’s going to come back. And I want to be part of that.”

9. He does his own nude scenes:

According to an interview with Vulture, Ellis admitted that he does his own nudity.

“I also lost a bet to my trainer when we got picked up for season four, which meant I had to get back into a different kind of shape than I’d been in before.

“I had a moment of pride with how I felt and how I looked. I wasn’t against the idea of nudity.”

10. He sings:

Tom Ellis is a talented vocalist. According to an interview with Vulture, Tom spoke about how he came to offer up his singing voice for the show.

“Singing on the show came about by accident,” he said.

“The cast and crew were having a karaoke night out in Vancouver, and I got up to belt out a song. The producers didn’t know I could sing, so they decided to work it into an episode in the first season.”

 11. Tom’s father, sister and uncle are all Baptist pastors:

Tom Ellis plays the role of a devil in the show, so it’s funny to know that his father is a Baptist Minister. 

Further, his uncle Robert Ellis is also a Baptist Minister. 

His twin sister, Lucy Ellis is also a pastor and the leader of a Christian congregation. 

According to amomama.com, Tom was glad that his family noticed the humorous side of his job. He also stated that the show famously called Lucifer did not cause any theological contradictions for him.

12. Ellis has a twin sister:

Tom Ellis grew up in a female household, as he was the only brother to three sisters. In fact, being surrounded by sisters, it is no surprise that Ellis is comfortable around women. 

The actor has stated in the past that he is not really a “bloke’s bloke,” being more comfortable around female energy. 

13. Tom Ellis had a crush on his co-star Tricia Helfer:

Tricia Helfer plays the role of Lucifer’s mother in the show and in an interview with Empire, Tom Ellis confessed to a secret. 

He admitted to being a huge fan of Tricia Helfer’s show Battlestar Galactica – then joked about having a crush on Tricia. Ellis has a great relationship with Trica and the two often discuss the roles played by Helfer. 

14. Can Tom Ellis really play the piano? 

Prior to becoming a professional actor, Ellis played the French horn in the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.

15. Ellis has three daughters:

Tom Ellis’ character in Lucifer is shown to strongly dislike children – as one does if he is Satan. Lucifer also shows disdain even for Trixie, the child of his colleague and primary love interest, Chloe Decker. 

So it’s interesting to note that this sentiment does not translate to his real life. Tom Ellis has three daughters whom he is very close to. 

The actor shares two daughters, namely Florence Elsie and Marnie Mae, with his first wife Tamzin Outhwaite. On the other hand, Tom’s daughter Nora Hill is from one of his previous relationships.

16. Ellis barely read the script of Lucifer:

In an interview Ellis said that he found the script of Lucifer to be “really fun”. 

The Welsh actor just read 10 pages of the script when he was offered the role. The pages of writing were enough for him to decide whether he wanted to do the project or not. Moreover, he wasn’t aware of the fact that the character was based on a comic book until much after he had accepted the role.

17. James McAvoy was Lucifer’s roommate and best man:

Who eats and drinks with the devil? In this case, it was the X-Men star, James McAvoy.

The two reportedly met when they were in drama school. Interestingly, James was the one who introduced Tom to his ex-wife, Tamzin Outhwaite. James was not only Tom’s roommate but also his best man at his first wedding.
