NBA: Greg Popovich Says that Tim Duncan ‘Doesn't Know a Lick About Coaching'

As far as quotable NBA figures in history go, Greg Popovich is one of the greatest ever. Over the course of his illustrious coaching career with five time NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs, Popovich has made us laugh with his unique style and delivery during press conferences.

When was Gregg Popovich appointed as the coach of Team USA?

In the year 2016, long time team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski stepped down from his role to concentrate exclusively on his position as head coach of Duke University‘s basketball program. After that, team USA put Gregg Popovich at the helm and he has managed the team since then. On Monday at Las Vegas, team USA started its training camp for the FIBA World Cup which will be held in Beijing from September 15th. So far for this training camp, the biggest news has been made by big name players like James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook who have voluntarily dropped out of it. The current USA roster is mainly made up of young NBA stars like Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker, Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner.

What did Gregg Popovich say about Tim Duncan?

During an interview with media personnel on the sideline, Popovich was asked if he was planning on bringing his tallest assistant coach (Tim Duncan) with himself. Popovich jokingly replied: “You’re referring to Tim Duncan? Tim Duncan doesn’t know a lick about coaching. I don’t even know why I hired him. You know, he’s given me a paycheck for 19 years so I was kind of obliged to pay him back.
