Neuro Linguistic Programming: All You Need to Know

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a unique psychological approach that analyzes strategies used by successful individuals and then works towards applying it to other people’s lives to help them reach their personal goals. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) builds a relation between patterns of behaviour that have been learned through experience with specific outcomes.

All proponents of NLP relate human actions to positivity. Even in the case of a plan’s failure or an unexpected occurrence, the experience isn’t considered good or bad. It’s just considered to be a source for more useful information which can be utilized in the future.

When was Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) developed?

Neuro-linguistic programming was developed at the University of California – Santa Cruz during the 1970s. It was the brainchild of John Grinder, a linguist, and Richard Bandler, an information scientist and mathematician. Judith DeLozier Leslie Cameron-Bandler, David Gordon and Robert Dilts were also some of the significant contributors to the development of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Learn how to master your communication skills and emotional intelligence through these NLP techniques. When you practice these techniques regularly, you will be able to exercise a far greater control on your life and mind.

Here are five NLP techniques to help enhance your performance:

Anchoring

The anchoring NLP method is important for pulling up a particular emotion, or putting yourself inside a particular state of mind. Anchoring is often used on one’s own self, or on another person. It works by associating an emotion with a physical action and that process is known as laying the anchor.

For example, if you wanted to tug the emotion happiness, you’d start by brooding about the times you were euphoric. You want to narrate the story of what happened that led up to the present moment in your head. Think of how it felt and enter tons of detail. Recall the moment and the feelings.

Now, hold the index and middle fingers of your right hand. Squeeze your fingers twice. On the second squeeze, think about your happy moments and feel the sensation multiply. Once again describe how you are feeling, what you’re thinking and press your fingers twice. Press again and let your feelings of happiness multiply. Do this five times. Later on, you’ll use those motions to bring back that sense of happiness.

If you were to try this on a different person, you can use an easy touch of the arm to anchor them.

Meta Model

The meta model NLP technique is employed to help you with understanding other people’s problems. It can also assist you with helping others understand their problems better. The goal is to deconstruct the conversation, discover the explanation behind the matter, and arrive at the solution to the problem.

More often than not, when someone features a problem, subconsciously the solution is understood, but often, the apparent solution tends to be extremely unlikable. This lack of uncertainty causes the matter to continue, in hopes that a replacement solution will eventually come up. By deconstructing the way someone words their problem, you’ll help them find an answer.

Mirroring

Another important NLP technique to learn and utilize is Mirroring. Being good at mirroring is an extremely helpful skill as it’s hard to dislike someone who knows the way to do that. Mirroring involves mimicking the behaviour of the person with whom you are trying to communicate. This simulation is done subtly and usually unconsciously.

Ways to try to do this include copying someone’s speech patterns, visual communication cues, vocabulary style, pace, tempo, pitch, tone, and volume.

Framing

The framing NLP technique is employed to extend or decrease the sensation of emotions. It is an excellent method to use along with the others mentioned in this post.

In life, you’ll experience good and bad moments. These moments are going to help you learn and grow. Memories, however, don’t have emotions attached to them. This detachment results from the fact that memories and emotions are handled by different sections of the brain. So at the instant, you’ll experience feelings, then you will be ready to recall them.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain that performs the task of storing memories. The amygdala is the part of the brain that controls emotions. When you recall a memory from the hippocampus, the amygdala will offer you a fast little reminder of the emotions you felt. Because of this, it’s possible to vary the sensation that is relevant to a specific set of memories.

Pattern Interruption

Pattern interruption is employed to store words into the subconscious of a listener. This technique works great with the others mentioned in this post.

To do this, you would want to lure the listener’s thoughts into a kind of sequence or pattern. Once the model takes hold, you pull them out of the paradigm for a critical moment before completing the shape. The listener’s subconscious is going to be anticipating the pattern to manifest while the conscious mind stays distracted.

By mastering Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), you’ll change the way you think about the present, view the past, and approach your life with a special mindset. It improves your emotional intelligence and enhances your communication skills. It helps you regulate your mind which helps you control your life better. With the techniques discussed within this post, you are one step closer to achieving personal and professional growth. Do try the techniques out today.
