Celebrating the Father Daughter Bond on this Father’s Day

Ever since I was a little girl, all the festivals, birthdays and special days were of utmost importance to me. I’d be as excited for everyone else’s birthday in the family as my own. I’d prepare for the special day in advance, plan for the gifts and try to make it as special I could with the minimal resources I could gather in the tender young age.
Daddy, I remember was always the one person in the family who would refuse to accept gifts and stay away from any sort of celebrations for his birthday. All he would say was you people celebrate your own, buy things for yourself, I don’t believe in these things. He would be more than willing to take us out for dinners on our birthdays and gift us with whatever we wanted but when it would be his turn, he’d completely refuse for any sort of celebration.
He would often exclaim of not being used to celebrating any of the days dedicated to him like his birthday or Father’s day. Being less fortunate as a child, he had been through a difficult childhood facing poverty. Daddy had worked hard all through these years to rise above all odds and make a name for him. He had worked day in and out to give us the best of everything possible.
At times I’d feel hurt as a little girl that Daddy has little feelings for us or maybe he doesn’t love us that much. Later down the line I realized it was not that he did not love us or not he did not like celebrations, just that he valued our desires more than his own. He gave little importance to his own wishes and emphasized only on ours.
I remember as a little girl when I was to leave for the hostel the next day, I did not have an extra pair of clothing for my Barbie Doll! Sounds funny as well as strange, we drove around the city to find that perfect dress for my doll because I had to leave for hostel the very next day. After visiting some 5-6 toy shops, I managed to find that beautiful purple dress for my Barbie which gave me immense satisfaction that now I was finally ready for the boarding school. It is one of the fondest memories of childhood that I have with Daddy. I still have that purple dress with me that reminds me of how pampered I was as a child.
He gave us the best education and with me being the elder one in the family he always looked upon me. Though I hardly met his expectations as a child but he refused to give up on me under any circumstances whatsoever. I remember him always being concerned and worried about my future as a little girl. He always believed that and does so even today that girls are no less significant than boys. He refused to give up on me, even when I chose to forget my dreams.
Today when I have finally found what I really love and what I have the desire to succeed in I can see the pride and contentment in his eyes. It’s almost like he found a ray of hope in me finally settling for a field that I could call my career. He yearned for years that one day he could actually see his daughter independent.
Today as I celebrate Father’s day with the best father in the world who happens to be my father, I too am a mother to a 18 months old baby and I totally understand his love and concern for us throughout his life. Though I am not that good at hiding my emotions like Daddy but I always wish to be as strong as him. I wish to be able to take the responsibility of my family like he has always been doing since ages. Daddy you always make me proud!
