#1.  Peacock Lake:

While we talk about lakes in Delhi, the first name that pops in our mind is the Peacock Lake which is also known as the Surajkund Lake. It is located near another beautiful Lake known as the Badkhal Lake which is just 50 minutes driven distance from the city. The history behind this lake is that this lake has a Sun Temple on its western bank and it was actually a water tank or an ancient reservoir. The lake was built during the Tomar Dynasty and under King Surajpal who was a devotee of Lord Sun and hence the name “Sun Lake”.

The sandy banks of the lake are a scenic spot to hang out with the friends. Every year from February 1 to 15, the Surajkund Mela or fair was organized here which filled the place with a lot of handicrafts and handlooms works, and all are available for sale at a very reasonable price.  

#2. Damdama Lake:

Damdama Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Delhi which falls under the Haryana State. It is located 45kms from Dhaula Kuan and 60 Kms from the ITO Delhi sector. If you are looking for a place to hang out with your buddies, then this is a nice place to check out. It is located near the Aravalli Hills which can be adventurous as well. It is quite a popular tourist spot due to the hills and lakes side by side. Especially during the winter season, people like to visit this lake for other fun activities such as trekking, climbing and as well as camping.

Another great lake in Delhi is none other than the Nilli Jheel which is situated in the Asola Bhatti area. It is one of those natural lakes which was formed after the excavations of sand for years. What makes the lake more attractive is the river banks and rock cliffs. It is also known as the Blue Lake. In the Nilli Jheel lake, you will find several aquatic plants and species. However, there is a place called Shani Dham Gate which is just 5 kms from the Nilli Jheel.

#4. Badkhal Lake:

Now comes one of the most popular lakes in Delhi known as the Badkhal Lake. Earlier it was named as “Bedakhal Lake”, and is located in Faridabad which is 32kms from the Delhi and is encircled by the Aravalli Hills. However, magically this lake runs out of water during the summer season and again fills up during the other season. You can enjoy a great scenic view sitting beside the lake for the whole day.

And if you are a birdwatcher, then this place will be paradise for you as you can enjoy watching birds of all kinds and some migratory birds as well. This is also well known for the water sports, one can enjoy here boating, canoeing, kayaking and many others.

Last but not the least is none other than the Naini Lake which is in Delhi, Model Town. This lake has new things to offer and has soon become one of the most attractive spots in Delhi. It is a 3 feet deep and a rectangularly shaped lake that covers 12 acres of area and is surrounded by small trees.

Delhi is not a ‘city of lakes’, and neither it is close to cities like Nainital and Udaipur as they offer some great lakes.
