Mental Illness: A Taboo No One Wants to Talk About

Whether you live in India or in the United States, you can always come across people who are suffering from mental illness. Despite a lot of people spreading awareness regarding physical fitness, only a handful bother to spread a word about mental illness because of the stigma associated with it. It is high time that people should start accepting it as a normal health condition that is both curable and normal. If you are suffering from prolonged mental illness and are afraid to open up about the same then you should change your perception first. Keeping things to self and not socializing with people is not going to do any good; rather it will just worsen your situation.
A lot of people refrain from visiting a doctor to get a proper treatment for their existing mental health condition as they consider it to be a matter of disgrace. They feel they are indifferent and consider isolation from the rest of the world to be the perfect solution. Being diagnosed with mental illness is not a problem, but not making efforts to come out of it surely is. Anxiety, suicidal thoughts, depression, and a feeling of uselessness are just a few of the emotions that you may feel often. If you are finding it difficult to overcome these unbearable conditions then take a note of the following measures and start incorporating them into your daily life. You are sure to feel the difference for self.

Stop being a shut-in

Locking yourself up in your house to avoid people is not going to make you feel better or improve your mental condition. One of the major reasons why people diagnosed with mental illness never recover early is because they lack the will to do so. No one is asking you to become a voluble person all of a sudden, but you can try coming out of your house and exchange a few words with your peers occasionally. Even this can contribute a lot towards your overall mental health development. Going out of your house will make you feel fresh, your senses will be rejuvenated if you start going for a walk daily. Even if you don’t find it comfortable to communicate with people, you can still go around appreciating the nature all alone.

Start exchanging your thoughts with your near and dear ones

Bottling up all your emotions can only result in an emotional outburst one day. Remember the exciting and refreshing chit-chats you used to have with your best friends? Wouldn’t you love to bring back all those lost good times again? I am sure, deep inside you are dying for it. If you have lost connection with your loved ones then make an attempt to contact them. It will not only make your bond stronger but will also bring back your lost confidence to a certain extent. By letting your emotions out you are actually letting go of everything that made you more vulnerable to mental illness. Once you start communicating with your family and friends, you are sure to recover a lot early then you can ever imagine.

Utilize your alone time productively

It is totally fine if you want to stay alone at home for some time. But don’t just sit in a corner of your room doing nothing and thinking about all the dreadful things that ever happened in your life. Start meditating, exercising or doing things that make you happy. You can either listen to your favorite songs while exercising or read some really good books. These activities don’t require you to talk or move out of your house, so you can easily do them. Once you start doing these activities, you will automatically start enjoying them. Your mental health will eventually start improving and you will love the overall healing process.
Different people have different likes and dislikes, so you can start doing things that you think will make you happy. Whenever you feel about giving up on your life, just think of all the good times you once enjoyed. This would surely create that urge to bring back those golden times back in your life. Dealing with mental illness all alone can indeed be a daunting and strenuous task but it is not impossible. Only you can change your life by overcoming this mental condition and trust me, once you did this you will start loving your life even more.
When you find one reason to give up on your life, just think of the endless reasons that kept a part of you motivated to continue for so long. Mental illness should never be a taboo and everyone should speak up on it. If you feel people with mental illness deserve equal rights as others or you have some other thoughts on this not so much talked about topic, then do share your views in the comments section below. Also, share this blog with your family and friends as you never know who might be in need of this.
