10 Tried and Tested Home remedies for split ends

Your choice of hair care regime can contribute a lot towards damaging your precious locks. Lack of timely care steps especially, trimming, cleansing and oil massaging can lead to split ends, hair feebleness and in extreme cases, hair loss. But, you can always get rid of the above-mentioned hair damages, especially, split ends, by following certain protective measures in your daily hair care regime.

What are split ends?

Split ends look exactly like they sound. When the strand of locks seems separated from each other at the end like two splits, they take the shape of split ends. According to the experts, each strand of hair comprises of three layers. The outermost layer, better known as the cuticle is essentially responsible for the formation of split ends. When the cells found in this layer get robbed away due to damages of sorts, the strands take the shape of separated ends at the bottom.

Home Remedies for Split Ends

1. Oils

Besides oils needed for the necessary oil massage, one may choose from the variety of nutrition laden oils to thoroughly hydrate the hair. Almond oil, walnut oil, sunflower oil, rose oil and castor oil can really do wonders to treat the emergence of split ends.  One can choose to apply these oils individually once in a while or their potent mixture.

2. Egg

One of the healthiest means to get rid of these ends is the application of egg, especially the yolk portion over the under-nourished scalp. An egg can be used in form of a shampoo when mixed with ingredients like one teaspoon of honey, one teaspoon of lime and tablespoon of olive oil. This mixture can be applied to wet hair and rinsed after ten minutes.

3. Honey

As one of the main reasons for the development of these hair formations is the loss of moisture and nutrients from the hair scalp. Experts say that the application of a thin layer of honey does the work of moisturizing the hair naturally without disturbing the pH value of the strands. For best effects, it is advised to use honey, warmed to lukewarm temperature and then rinse the hair.

4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is laden with healthy fatty acids. It makes an excellent natural conditioner to nourish the split ends.

Melt two tablespoons of coconut oil over low flame. Apply it all over your hair and scalp, especially the ends. You can also try and melt smaller portions by rubbing it between the hands.

5. Shea Butter

Just like coconut oil, Shea butter also contains rich amount of fatty acids. In addition, it also contains vitamins A and E. This succulent butter helps to lock in the moisture, thus helping you get rid of split ends. Just a small quantity is required to moisturize your hair.

6. Avocado

Avocado is an excellent deep conditioner to create lustrous locks. It is stacked with essential fatty acids, protein, magnesium, vitamins A, D, and E, along with other nutrients that work to nourish your hair and stimulate growth as well. Avocado also contains hair-softening properties.

Mash a ripe avocado and add two tablespoons each of coconut oil and olive oil to prepare a paste with a creamy consistency. Apply this hair mask liberally onto the hair (except the roots) and leave for about half an hour. Rinse it off and wash your hair normally.

7. Bananas

Being laden with potassium, natural oils, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and E, bananas help to restore the natural elasticity of the hair as well as minimize breakage. Also, they moisturize and soften your hair, promote repair, and improve the manageability.

Prepare a mask by mixing one ripe banana with two tablespoons of plain yogurt, a few drops of rose water, and juice of half lemon in a blender. Apply this hair mask onto the affected hair locks. Leave it to work for an hour and follow with a regular wash. Repeat it two times a week to get rid of split ends fast.

8. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is an amazing moisturizer to treat dry and damaged hair. It also promotes hair growth and prevents hair loss.

Just massage fresh gel extracted from one or two aloe leaves (depending upon the hair volume) into the hair and let it stay for half an hour. Wash your hair with a regular shampoo. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice along with two teaspoons of jojoba oil or olive oil to maximize the benefits.

9. Papaya

Papaya is packed with a high content of protein and provides excellent nourishment to the hair to reduce split ends. Besides, it also adds volume to your hair, removes buildup, and retains the natural shine and softness of the hair.

Blend half a papaya with half a cup of plain yogurt to get a smooth paste. Apply this mask onto the affected hair locks. You can also apply it to the roots. Leave it to work for about half an hour. Rinse off and shampoo as usual. Follow this remedy once a week, or at least two-three times a month to get rid of split ends.

10. Beer

Beer helps to control and treat split ends by supplying sufficient sugar and protein to the damaged hair follicles. Additionally, it also works as an amazing conditioner to add shine and volume to the hair.

Shampoo your hair. Pour some flat beer in a small spray bottle. Spray it all over the mid- and end-sections of damp hair. Let it sit for 3-4 minutes. You don’t need to rinse it off. The beer smell would go away by itself as the hair dries. Follow this remedy once a week to get desired results.

Besides using these remedies, it is equally important to take good care of your hair and follow some preventive measures to avoid the occurrence of split ends. For instance, avoid excessive rubbing of hair with a towel after hair wash, reduce the use of heat styling, blow drying, and straightening are just a few to mention. Most importantly, add lots of protein to your diet through food items like yogurt, cheese, milk, legumes, and poultry to improve the hair texture.
