Feminism – What does it actually mean? Takes of some well-known people on it

Feminism or I’m a feminist; this ideology has sparked a lot of uproar in the world for past few decades. While everyone is busy picking sides if they support the ideology or not, many lack the understanding of what does it mean.
As per the definition –
“Feminism is the belief that both sexes should have the same economic, social, and political rights”
Feminism propagates the idea of equality amongst the sexes and is not limited to one gender i.e women. It believes that any task on this earth can be done by man and woman equally. It refrains the world from stereotyping like women are weak or men cannot be emotional, etc.
The ideology gained momentum during the start of 19th century when women started raising their voices for equal rights and duties. Since it went against the popular patriarchy system, the idea has been a constant topic of debate. The world has been divided into two halves- feminist and anti-feminist.
Here are few famous people and their takes on feminism-
Beyonce – Beyonce is the most powerful artist in the world of music. Keeping the racist society at bay, she has been loved and adored across the nations. Being true to her style of breaking stereotypes, she performed live in front of a huge screen reflecting the word “feminist” during MTV VMAs in 2016. She was later quoted by a famous magazine saying “I’m not really sure people know or understand what a feminist is, but it’s very simple. It’s someone who believes in equal rights for men and women. If you are a man who believes your daughter should have the same opportunities and rights as your son, you’re a feminist. We need men and women to understand the double standards that still exist in the world, and we need to have a real conversation so we can begin to make changes.
Barack Obama is another pro-feminist. He has openly expressed his thoughts on his support for feminism ideology and his actions have conveyed the same. From being brought up by a single parent – his mother to being married to Michelle Obama who has her own strong standing in the field of education and fathering two beautiful daughters, Obama has been surrounded by women. He has very closely witnessed the inequality women face in various walks of life owing to their gender and has been trying to bridge the gap. He has signed various legislations supporting the welfare of women like Affordable Care Act, Violence against Women Act, etc as well as enforced improvised fair pay and paid leave protection.
Gender inequality is not only limited to women. There is a section of the society that also believes in empowering men and giving them equal rights as well. Governments across the world are designing laws to support men with parenting, domestic violence, marriage, etc rights which usually are more favoured towards women.
One famous person who believes in this is- Swarup Sarkar, India’s dedicated Men’s Rights Activist. Sarkar has been addressing the gender inequality issue across the globe and has been spreading awareness about the injustice happening towards men. Sarkar himself was a victim of false acquisitions made by his wife which made him aware of the severity of the issue and how it was going unnoticed. Since then Sarkar has been a feminist working towards equality for men.
Patriarchal system viewed men and women differently and laid down rules benefitting each of them in different ways. Looking at the disparity caused by it, it’s time to reframe the rules and make them gender neutral, for no one should be denied of any opportunity owing to their gender.

I believe feminism should be there so that there should be a balance of responsibilities among masses.

Exactly. We need to stop discriminating based on gender or even caste and color for that matter.

Wish people understand the simple definition of feminism which is ‘equality’ and NOT ‘unnecessary female-bias’!!!
Very well written, Trusha!
